Kawai Musical Instruments Mfg. Co., Ltd
A Japanese manufacturer of musical instruments, precision metal parts and business software with manufacturing in Japan, Indonesia, China and the USA. These days it is mostly occupied in the music sector with making pianos, both mechanical and digital, although their Lowrey Organ division in the USA also manufactures organs. The company was originally founded in 1927 in Hamamatsu, Japan by Koichi Kawai and was until the 1960's exclusively occupied with manufacturing pianos but in the 1960 the company opened up a music school called the Kawai Academy of Music and a piano technician school called Kawai Piano Technical Center, it also entered the then burgeoning guitar market with the acquisition of the Nippon Onpa Kogyo company in 1966 and while most of the output of that company continued to be sold using either the Teisco brand or a number of foreign brandnames (in addition to owning the Teisco brandname NOK was also a large OEM), there was a number of Kawai branded guitars sold as well, particularly in the latter half of the 70's and early 80's. Kawai was also the first Asian piano manufacturer to set up shop in the USA in 1963 and started assembling pianos there in the 1990s.

Kawai entered the electronic musical instruments market when it acquired NOK, but although they were mostly known as a manufacturer of guitars they also made organs, initially they continued to be sold using the Teisco brandname especially in markets were it was better known than Kawai, such as the USA, but there were some Teisco products that utilised Kawai know how (electric pianos etc) and some organs were marketed under the Kawai name in Japan, but the Kawai name gradually took over and the Kawai SX-240 analogue synthesiser introduced in 1984 is the last product that was available under the Teisco name. Kawai entered the syntheseiser market in the latter half of the 70´s, their first products were fairly simplistic monophonic synths but their later digital products are notable since they were in part based on additive synthesis making Kawai the only major instrument manufacturer that has put out such machines.
Distribution: In Greece by I. Diamantopoulos, in Hungary by Absolute Bt., in Iceland by Tónastöðin, in Norway by Morgan Instrument, in Thailand by Central Marketing Group.
