Algam S.A.S. French musical instrument distributor that also trades under the SML name when dealing with (mostly) classical music instruments. Manufactures guitars & basses under the Lâg brand including both high end models made in France and medium priced ones made in Asia, sells budget guitars and amplifiers under the Jim Harley name, classical guitars & other folk instruments under the Santo y Mayor and Sylvana stensils, African and latin American percussion products under the Tanga brand, guitar bags and cases under the Tobago name, guitar cables and parts under the Yellow stensil and stands and fasteners under the R. T. X. label in addition to selling mostly Asian sourced wind instruments under the SML Paris name. Note that the company appears to be slowly discontinuing the use of the Yellow and Tobago brands. Algam was initially founded in 1972 as a manufacturer of ethnic musical instruments and accessories under the Camac brand but that side of the business was sold a few years back and is now the harp specialist Camac. It entered the guitar business in 2003 after it lost the Gibson distribution rights in France, but the company had already invested in the Michel Lâg-Chavarria operation a year earlier. Algam had a particularily close relationship with Japanese guitar manufacturer Takamine that they had been distributing since the 70's and that was the reason they stopped making acoustic guitars when they took over the Lag operation, but when Fender took over KMC Music in 2007 and moved the distribution of Takamine to Fender Europe, Algam responded by dropping design cooperation with the company but Algam was actually the originator of the Takamine Natural series and another guitar design was in the works that the company had intended to introduce in cooperation with Takamine in 2008 but was in the end released as a Lag product in 2010.
